Student Learning Outcomes Visualization Project

To fulfill UF’s mission as a comprehensive learning institution, UF faculty establish student learning outcomes for each academic program that describe what students should know and be able to do when they graduate. Student learning outcomes (SLOs) for each academic program are listed in the UF catalogs.  The faculty assess student achievement of these outcomes and report them annually to the Office of Institutional Assessment

The University of Florida Student Learning Outcome (UF-SLO) Visualization Project is a collaboration between the Office of Institutional Assessment and the Office of Institutional Planning and Research that summarizes SLO achievement at UF and provides a transparent, accessible view of SLO performance at the university, college, and program levels. The assessment data visualized on these pages has been provided by the program faculty in their annual data reports. Faculty use the SLO results to examine the effectiveness of their programs and make changes as needed improve student learning  At the university level, we use this information to continuously improve institutional assessment processes. The visualizations begin with the 2018-19 academic year and will continue thereafter.

Definitions

Student Learning Outcome (SLO). A statement of what students should know and be able to do by the time they complete an academic program. These are in three categories at UF. For undergraduates:  content, communication, and critical thinking. For graduate and professional students: knowledge, skills, and professional behaviors.

Threshold of Acceptability. The acceptable percentage of students who must achieve a Student Learning Outcome for faculty to consider the outcome to be met successfully and for the program to be considered effective. At the University of Florida, the Academic Assessment Committee has set the minimum threshold to be 70%. Faculty analyze their assessment results to determine the percentage of students who met the outcome in any given year, compare that to their threshold of acceptability, and determine it the threshold was met or not met.
