At the University of Florida, those who teach use many assessment types to determine the degree to which students are learning and meeting program expectations. These assessments fall into two categories: direct measures of student learning, such as exams, projects, papers, productions, presentations, performances, etc., and indirect measures that provide student opinion or perceptions of learning, such as surveys, exit interviews, focus groups, etc.
Those who develop or select assessment instruments should consider principles of fairness and equity throughout the entire assessment process, including assessment development, opportunity to learn, administration, methodologies, interpretations and uses of results, and the systematic evaluation of the measurement properties of the assessment instruments. In 2021-2022, a group of faculty, staff, and administrators formed a Task Force, led by Institutional Assessment staff, to develop a set of guidelines to provide a framework for the consideration of fairness and equity in the development of new assessments or the review of existing assessments of student learning and achievement.
The guidelines are attached here: UF Fairness and Equity in Assessment Guidelines - Student Assessment
